Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an archaeological survey for my planning application?
If your development site is in an area of historical interest, the Local Planning Authority (LPA) may require a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA), Desk Based Assessment (DBA) or a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI). We provide the expert reports needed to meet these planning conditions efficiently.
What is a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA)?
An HIA is a document required for planning applications involving or near heritage assets. It evaluates the significance of the asset and how your proposed project might affect it, offering mitigation strategies to satisfy planning officers.
What is a Desk Based Assessment (DBA) and why do I need one?
A DBA is usually the first stage of the archaeological planning process. It involves a detailed study of historical records, maps, and aerial photographs to determine the likelihood of archaeological remains existing on your site. This report is essential for identifying potential “heritage risks” early, allowing you to plan your development around them and avoid costly surprises later.
What is a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI)?
A WSI is a formal document that outlines exactly how archaeological work will be carried out on a site. It acts as a “method statement” that must be approved by the County Archaeologist or Local Planning Authority (LPA). Whether you need a geophysical survey or a full excavation, a WSI ensures the work meets professional standards (CIfA) and satisfies your planning conditions.
How long does it take to get a WSI approved?
While we can often draft a WSI within a few days, the approval process depends on the LPA’s response times – typically between 2 to 4 weeks. We recommend commissioning your WSI as early as possible to ensure your project timeline remains on track.
Can a DBA or WSI help lower my project costs?
Absolutely. A high-quality DBA can often demonstrate that the archaeological potential of a site is low, potentially removing the need for expensive physical excavations. Similarly, a precise WSI ensures that only the necessary work is performed, preventing unnecessary delays.
What are the benefits of non-invasive surveys like GPR or LiDAR?
Non-invasive techniques like Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) allow us to “see” beneath the surface without breaking ground. This is faster, more cost-effective, and less disruptive than trial trenching, providing a clear map of potential risks before construction begins.
Does Reclaim Heritage work with community groups?
Yes! As a Community Interest Company (CIC), we specialise in community-led archaeology. We provide the professional equipment, training, and supervision needed to help local groups uncover and celebrate their own history.
